There is no doubt the Premier League is the most-watched sports league across the globe. An estimated 640 million homes world-wide tune in and watch their favorite teams and players from the EPL.

Maybe the only thing football fans and Premier League bettors enjoy more than cheering on their chosen club, is against their biggest rivals.

Premier League fans: which fanbase is the most disliked?

Who are the most annoying fans on social media? Which fanbase is the most deluded and who are the least intelligent? We asked the tough questions to 2,000 Premier League football fans and this is what we found out.

Position Most annoying fans % Most deluded fans % Least intelligent fans % Most disliked team %
1 Liverpool 19.9% Arsenal 22.5% Arsenal 14.2% Liverpool 18.0%
2 Arsenal 19.6% Liverpool 13.0% Liverpool 13.9% Manchester United 14.2%
3 Manchester United 15.4% Tottenham Hotspur 11.0% Manchester United 8.9% Arsenal 12.4%

The above chart gives a quick glimpse of the three teams with the most votes in each of our four categories. It is easy to notice that Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United are at or near the top in each one.

It is no coincidence that the three most successful clubs in top-flight history are also Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal. Those three clubs have won a combined 52 league titles since 1889 and have obviously built up quite a following of both supporters and detractors over that time.

Find out how the Big 6 teams voted in our survey?

Which Premier League team has the most annoying fans on social media?

The rising popularity of social media has only enabled the verbal jousting to grow among opposing fans. It is easier than ever today for fans to trade compliments and, more-likely, insults about their biggest rivals and competitors.

The first question we asked in our survey is which teams had the most-annoying fans on social media and this is what we learned:

Team %
Liverpool 19.9%
Arsenal 19.6%
Manchester United 15.4%
Chelsea 9.5%
Manchester City 8.0%
Tottenham Hotspur 5.1%
Leeds United 3.8%
Aston Villa 3.7%
Brighton and Hove Albion 2.4%
West Ham United 2.4%
Newcastle United 1.9%
Crystal Palace 1.4%
Brentford 1.3%
Burnley 1.3%
Everton 1.2%
Leicester City 0.8%
Watford 0.8%
Southampton 0.6%
Norwich City 0.4%
Wolverhampton Wanderers 0.4%

It was tight at the very top between Liverpool and Arsenal, with Manchester United solidly in third. The Reds and Gunners each receiving almost 20% of the vote is not a surprise, but what is interesting is where their votes came from.

Manchester United fans seem almost torn between who they dislike more. 49.5% of their supporters voted for the Reds, while 38% of them felt Arsenal supporters were the most-annoying bunch.

For the Gunners to have finished 8th in the Premier League last season but still receive almost 20% of the vote is a testament to the enduring impact of all the Gunners out there.

Which Premier League team has the most deluded fans?

Arsenal supporters last celebrated a Premier League title in 2004. They finished second in 2016, but have done no better than a pair of 5th-place finishes since.

However, the passion and annual belief that ‘this is their year’ the Gunners continue to display for their squad has earned them the title of most-deluded fans in our survey.

Team %
Arsenal 22.5%
Liverpool 13.0%
Tottenham Hotspur 11.0%
Manchester United 8.8%
Chelsea 7.5%
Manchester City 5.8%
Aston Villa 4.5%
Leeds United 4.2%
Newcastle United 3.7%
West Ham United 2.7%
Everton 2.6%
Brighton and Hove Albion 2.3%
Burnley 2.2%
Brentford 2.1%
Leicester City 1.8%
Crystal Palace 1.7%
Watford 1.0%
Wolverhampton Wanderers 1.0%
Southampton 0.7%
Norwich City 0.7%

Arsenal received at least 10 votes from the fans of nine separate clubs. The variety of fans who think they are most deluded is intriguing and Gunners supporters were the clear runaway winners in this category.

Tottenham Hotspur were also high up on our list. Spurs finished with 179 total votes, behind only Arsenal and Liverpool. The last time Tottenham won the top-flight title was in 1961 and rival supporters seem all too aware of this fact when weighed against Spurs fans’ expectations.

Which Premier League team has the least intelligent fans?

Since the Gunners last won a championship, Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea have all won five titles each. It can be difficult constantly defending your team and players when your club doesn’t back it up with results.

No doubt Arsenal’s lack of recent success â€â€?married with their alleged delusions – is one of the reasons why their supporters earned the dubious title of least intelligent fans.

Team %
Arsenal 14.2%
Liverpool 13.9%
Manchester United 8.9%
Chelsea 8.8%
Aston Villa 7.0%
Leeds United 5.5%
Manchester City 5.3%
Tottenham Hotspur 4.9%
Burnley 4.5%
West Ham United 4.2%
Newcastle United 3.6%
Crystal Palace 3.1%
Everton 2.9%
Brentford 2.7%
Brighton and Hove Albion 2.5%
Watford 1.9%
Norwich City 1.7%
Leicester City 1.6%
Wolverhampton Wanderers 1.5%
Southampton 1.2%

The Gunners fanbase received exactly 200 votes and Liverpool supporters were right behind them, finishing only four votes back.

It’s worth pointing out that by finding themselves at the bottom of this list, Wolverhampton and Southampton could possibly make a claim as the most-intelligent fans.

Wolves and Saints won only 12 games each last season, and sports betting experts don’t expect many more from either club this year. Maybe both teams and their fans should consider it a victory that they earned less than 2% of the vote in this poll.

Which Premier League team do you dislike the most?

It’s often noted that success breeds jealousy.  When it comes to disliking other football clubs, more often than not fans are jealous of those who achieve what their own teams can’t.

We polled our 2,000 fans about which team they disliked the most. Our results show there is an obvious link between clubs with the most titles and the teams who received the most votes.

Team %
Liverpool 18.0%
Manchester United 14.2%
Arsenal 12.4%
Manchester City 10.3%
Chelsea 9.1%
Tottenham Hotspur 7.5%
Aston Villa 3.6%
Crystal Palace 3.3%
Leeds United 3.2%
Brighton and Hove Albion 2.7%
Burnley 2.5%
West Ham United 2.2%
Everton 2.2%
Wolverhampton Wanderers 2.1%
Brentford 1.8%
Watford 1.3%
Leicester City 1.1%
Norwich City 1.1%
Newcastle United 1.0%
Southampton 0.4%

Most of us want to be liked. However, if the reason you were disliked was because you have combined to win more than 50 top-flight titles, like the top three teams in this survey have, you probably wouldn’t mind being so unpopular.

If we had done our poll 11 years ago, we suspect Manchester City might be ranked just a little lower on our list.  However, when you have won three out of the last four league titles, and five of the last 10 like the Citizens have, your list of haters will grow in a hurry.

Although it has been a very long time since Spurs won a league title, they still finished 6th overall on our list. This proves our theory that there are ways besides winning titles to get yourself disliked.  The Big 6 all finished at the top of this list, regardless of whether they have achieved any recent success in the Premier League.

Teams that would be classed as underdogs draw fewer unhappy glances from rival fans.

Summary

The more successful the club is, the more likely rival fans will resent them. Success can be determined by league titles, or by the ability of a club to make money and spend money in a way most other teams can’t. The fact that the Big 6 teams are all found at the top of our lists for each of the questions we asked shouldn’t be a surprise.

The good news for fans is that every time a Big 6 team wins a league title, the five other teams have to lose it. Savvy supporters and football bettors often know who is likely to win and, just as importantly, who isn’t.

Is Liverpool still Man United’s biggest rival or has Manchester City taken over that role?

There are also teams like Villa and Leeds found high-up in our poll. These teams have achieved great success in the past, but very little recently in top-flight terms.

Perhaps football fans are also not so forgiving of those who are still clinging to their past glories.

With 48 hours to go before the 94th Academy Awards begins in Hollywood, all the drama surrounds a super close race between “CODA” at +100 odds and “The Power of the Dog” at -115 odds to win Best Picture at the 2022 Oscars.

Oscars 2022 Odds PIcks Best Picture CODA Power of the Dog Chastain Kotsur
“CODA” stars deaf actors — Troy Kotsur (right) and Marlee Matlin (center) — is now even money to win Best Picture at the 2022 Oscars. (Image: Apple)

Before the nominations were announced, “The Power of the Dog” — a western directed by Jane Campion — was the overwhelming betting Best Picture favorite at +175 odds versus “CODA” at +2500 odds.

After the 2022 Oscars nominations were revealed, “The Power of the Dog” remained the favorite at -155 odds, but “CODA” was a semi-long shot at +2000 odds.

2022 OSCARS ODDS
BEST PICTURE
  • The Power of the Dog -115
  • CODA +100
  • Belfast +1400
  • West Side Story +3500
  • Dune +4000
  • King Richard +4000
  • Don’t Look Up +6500
  • Licorice Pizza +8000
  • Drive My Car +8000
  • Nightmare Alley +15000

However, in the last six weeks, “CODA” gained steam after it won several categories at other awards shows including the Producer’s Guild Awards. According to the most-recent update at DraftKings, “CODA” is now +100 odds — or even money — to win Best Picture.

The math points toward “The Power of the Dog” winning Best Picture, but we like “CODA” to win Sunday night only because “The Power of the Dog” started out so slow that it put us to sleep both times we tried to watch it.

Best Actress: Jessica Chastain

In the Best Actress race, Nicole Kidman emerged as the early favorite at +120 odds for portrayal of Lucille Ball, but Jessica Chastain has been gaining momentum ever since she won at the SAG Awards for her role in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.”

Right after Chastain won the coveted Actor at the SAG Awards, bookies adjusted the odds and she was near coinflip at +125 odds to win at the Oscars, while Kidman slipped to +150.

Chastain is now the consensus favorite at -140 odds to win her first golden statue. You can wager on Kidman with a value bet at +450 odds as she seeks her second Best Actress victory.

2022 OSCARS ODDS
BEST ACTRESS
  • Jessica Chastain (The Eyes of Tammy Faye) -140
  • Penelope Cruz (Parallel Mothers) +350
  • Nicole Kidman (Being the Ricardos) +450
  • Olivia Colman (The Lost Daughter) +800
  • Kristen Stewart (Spencer) +800

Penelope Cruz and Pedro Almodovar collaborated once again with “Parallel Mothers”, and Cruz saw a huge surge in her odds in the last two weeks. Cruz opened at +1400 odds, but bookies have since adjusted her line to +350 as the second favorite on the board after she picked up a lot of votes according to “my secret ballot” reports in the Hollywood trade rags.

Best Supporting Actress: Ariana DeBose

It looks like Ariana DeBose is running away with the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. The triple-threat talent — acting, dancing, singing — is one of the bright spots in Steven Spielberg’s remake of the classic musical “West Side Story.”

2022 OSCARS ODDS
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
  • Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) -1600
  • Kirsten Dunst (The Power of the Dog) +600
  • Aunjanue Ellis (King Richard) +1800
  • Judi Dench (Belfast) +2500
  • Jessie Buckley (The Lost Daughter) +3500

DeBose opened as the betting favorite at -350 odds, but she’s currently a massive favorite at -1600 odds to Best Supporting Actress, which is saying a lot considering the outstanding performances from this year’s batch of nominees which includes Kirsten Dunst, Aunjanue Ellis, Jessie Buckley, and Dame Judi Dench.

Dunst from “The Power of the Dog” is the closest competition at +600 odds.

Best Actor: Will Smith

Sometimes you’re a front runner that pulls off a wire-to-wire victory. Will Smith from “King Richard” opened as the consensus betting favorite at -330 odds to win Best Actor. He swept all the major award ceremonies like the SAG and Golden Globes, which is why Smith is now the big favorite at -800 odds.

Do not be confused with the “King Richard” title. It’s not Shakespeare, but rather, it’s a biopic about the father of tennis prodigies Venus and Serena Williams. If Smith wins his first Oscar for playing Richard Williams, he’ll edge out Denzel Washington. Washington undertook a rare crack at Shakespeare with a film version of “Macbeth.”

2022 OSCARS ODDS
BEST ACTOR
  • Will Smith (King Richard) -800
  • Benedict Cumberbatch (The Power of the Dog) +450
  • Andrew Garfield (tick, tick… BOOM!) +1100
  • Denzel Washington (The Tragedy of Macbeth) +2500
  • Javier Bardem (Being the Ricardos) +4000

The voters at the Academy have a hankering for thespians who portray real-life people. Of course, this year’s nominees based on real people also included Andrew Garfield from “tick, tick… BOOM!” as struggling playwright Jonathan Larson (“Rent”). Plus, Javier Barden from “Being the Ricardos” earned a nod for his role as actor/musician/TV producer Desi Arnaz, Jr.

Benedict Cumberbatch is the other lone fictional character in this year’s Best Actor category, but has the closest shot at upsetting Smith at +450 odds. Cumberbatch played a badass ranch owner in Montana in a western flick

Best Supporting Actor: Troy Kotsur

Troy Kotsur from “CODA” emerged as the betting favorite to win Best Supporting Actor at -500 odds. Kotsur, as the deaf father and fisherman in “CODA”, was initially the second favorite on the betting board at +375 odds when the nominations were released. Kotsur won his category at other awards shows including the SAG Awards. He’s now trying to make Hollywood history as the first deaf actor win at the Oscars.

2022 OSCARS ODDS
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
  • Troy Kotsur (CODA) -500
  • Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Power of the Dog) +300
  • Ciaran Hinds (Belfast) +2000
  • Jesse Plemons (The Power of the Dog) +3500
  • JK Simmons (Being the Ricardos) +3500

Kodi Smit-McPhee from “The Power of the Dog” was the initially betting favorite to win Best Supporting Actor at -350 odds. Smit-McPhee saw his odds drop to -150 after the SAG Awards, but in the last couple of weeks, the odds flip-flopped with Kotsur. Heading into the Oscars, Smit-McPhee is now +300 odds as the second favorite on the board chasing Kotsur at -500 odds.

Best Director: Jane Campion

Jane Campion opened as the betting favorite at -750 odds to win Best Director with “The Power of the Dog”, which is a western set in Montana in the 1920s. But, right now she’s a humongous favorite at-3500 odds. She was previously nominated in 1994 for “The Paino”, but did not win Best Director that year.

“The Power of the Dog” earned 12 nominations this year, or more than any other film. Campion is also nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay.

2022 OSCARS ODDS
BEST DIRECTOR
  • Jane Campion (The Power of the Dog) -3500
  • Steven Spielberg (West Side Story) +800
  • Kenneth Branagh (Belfast) +900
  • Ryusuke Hamaguchi (Drive My Car) +1200
  • Paul Thomas Anderson (Licorice Pizza) +1600

Campion attempts to become the third female winning director in history. Last year, Chloe Zhao (“Nomandland”) was the second woman to win Best Director. If Campion wins, she’ll beat out the legendary Steven Spielberg, along with Paul Thomas Anderson.

Best Documentary: Summer of Soul

If you ask Questlove, he’d say he would be the last musician on Earth that would win an award at the Oscars for best directing. Of course, in this instance, he’s getting accolades for his sensational work as a documentary filmmaker with “Summer of Soul (… Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised)”, which documents the Harlem Cultural Festival in 1969.

You can back “Summer of Soul” and Questlove at -350 odds to win Best Documentary Feature.

2022 OSCARS ODDS
BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE
  • Summer of Soul -350
  • Flee +250
  • Attica +1400
  • Ascension +2500
  • Writing with Fire +3500

For nearly 50 years, the footage went untouched before Questlove spliced it together as a documentary that’s part concert film and part history lesson. “Summer of Soul” features amazing performances from Nina Simone, Sly and the Family Stone, Stevie Wonder, The 5th Dimension, The Staple Singers, and Gladys Knight and the Pips.

Best Original Screenplay: Licorice Pizza

Paul Thomas Anderson seeks his first writing victory at the Oscars after earning his fifth screenplay nomination. He earned two nods for Best Original Screenplay with “Magnolia” and “Boogie Nights” in the late 1990s. He also earned two Best Adapted Screenplay nominations for “There Will Be Blood” (2007) and “Inherent Vice” (2014). However, he went 0-for-4 with his previous writing nominations.

“Licorice Pizza” is a 1970s period piece about a child actor growing up in the Valley, but it’s also another love letter from PTA to the Valley. Anderson is the betting favorite, but he saw his Best Original Screenplay numbers slip a bit from -165 odds a couple of weeks ago to -110 right now.

2022 OSCARS
BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY ODDS
  • Licorice Pizza -110
  • Belfast  +120
  • Don’t Look Up +600
  • King Richard +1000
  • The Worst Person in the World +2500

Kenneth Branagh wrote and directed “Belfast”, which is his personal coming of age story set amidst The Troubles in Northern Ireland in the late 1960s. Branagh saw his odds improve from +160 to +120, which means it’s almost a coinflip against Anderson in this screenwriting category. Since it’s a close call, you might as well take a flier on “Belfast” at +120.

Best Adapted Screenplay: CODA

“CODA” opened as the second favorite on the betting board at +650 odds, but now it’s the betting favorite at -200 odds to win Best Adapted Screenplay. “CODA” is a compelling story about an aspiring singer with two hearing impaired parents from small fishing village in New England, but she struggles to make a decision to leave her parents behind or pursue her dream. It’s based on a French film titled “La Famille Belier” from 2014.

“The Power of the Dog” — based on a western novel by Thomas Savage — was the initial betting favorite at -500 odds to win Best Adapted Screenplay, but its odds slipped to +150. “The Power of the Dog” won best screenplay at the Golden Globes, but “CODA” was not nominated. CODA won top screenplay at the BAFTAs and at the Writer’s Guild Awards.

2022 OSCARS
BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY ODDS
  • CODA -200
  • The Power of the Dog +150
  • The Lost Daughter +800
  • Dune +1600
  • Drive My Car +2000

There’s some stellar source material this year in this category. “Drive My Car” is based on a short story from Haruki Murakami, who is known as Japan’s greatest living novelist and writer. Frank Herbert’s sci-fi novel “Dune” originally failed as a motion picture back in the 1980s, but Hollywood hit a home run with their second attempt. “The Lost Daughter” was directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, who also penned the screenplay based on Elena Ferrante’s novel.

Hollywood hosted the SAG Awards over the weekend and two wins of note that altered the betting lines and odds for the 2022 Oscars. Jessica Chastain took home the coveted “Actor” trophy in the Best Actress Category for her role in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye”, and she’s now the betting favorite to win at the 2022 Oscars at +125 odds ahead of Nicole Kidman from “Meet the Ricardos” at +150 odds.

In “The Eyes of Tammy Faye”, Chastain played the real-life Tammy Faye Bakker who was the wife of infamous TV evangelist Jim Bakker. Chastain looked a little surprised when they called out her name as the winner at the SAG Awards, because Kidman was the favorite to win.

Chastain had been previously nominated at the Oscars for Best Supporting Actress in 2012 and Best Actress in 2013, but she lost both times. After her win at the SAG Awards, Chastain saw her Best Actress odds at the Oscars jump from +500 to +125.

The 2022 Oscars will take place at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood on Sunday, March 27.

Kotsur Closing Gap on Smit-McPhee

In the Best Supporting Actor Category, Troy Kotsur from “CODA” won the Actor at the SAG Awards. Kotsur, who is a deaf actor, plays the role of a deaf father who has to come to grips with his daughter — who is not hearing impaired — going off to college.

Kotsur edged out Kodi Smit-McPhee from “The Power of the Dog”, and the bookies at BetMGM altered their odds. Smit-McPhee is still the favorite at -155 odds to win Best Supporting Actor at the 2022 Oscars, but Kotsur closed the gap and he’s only +110 odds in a close race.

2022 OSCAR ODDS – BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
NOW  2/22/2022
Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Power of the Dog) -155 -350
Troy Kotsur (CODA) +110 +375
Ciaran Hinds (Belfast) +990 +500
Jesse Plemons (The Power of the Dog) +3300 +1600
JK Simmons (Being the Ricardos) +3300 +2500

You always need to keep a close eye on any race at the Oscars with multiple thespians from the same film in a single category. That’s the case with “The Power of the Dog” with Jesse Plemons and Smit-McPhee both up for Best Supporting Actor at the 2022 Oscars.

Prior to the SAG Awards, Smit-McPhee was the betting favorite at -350 odds versus +375 odds for Kotsur. But after winning his first Actor on Sunday, Kotsur saw his Oscars odds dramatically bump in his favor. The other nominees — Plemons, JK Simmons, and Ciaran Hinds — saw their Oscars odds drop after Kotsur won the Actor.

Check out this inspiring speech from Kotsur from the 2022 SAG Awards.

Chastain, Kidman Down to the Wire

It’s still a close race in the Best Actress category with Kidman not far behind Chastain on the Oscars betting board over at DraftKings. Kidman plays Lucille Ball in “Meet the Ricardos”, which is directed by Aaron Sorkin, and Kidman saw her odds drop from +120 to +150 to win Best Actress. Just 20 years ago, Kidman won her first and only Oscar in “The Hours” back in 2002. She’s seeking a second win.

2022 OSCAR ODDS – BEST ACTRESS
NOW 2/22/2022
Jessica Chastain (The Eyes of Tammy Faye) +125 +500
Nicole Kidman (Being the Ricardos) +150 +120
Olivia Colman (The Lost Daughter) +400 +400
Kristen Stewart (Spencer) +450 +200
Penelope Cruz (Parallel Mothers) +1600 +1400

Olivia Colman, who earned a third nod in the last four years with “The Lost Daughter” is seeking a second Best Actress win. Colman’s odds remained steady at +400.

Kristen Stewart from “Spencer” saw a noticeable drop off. She was the second betting favorite behind Kidman a couple of weeks ago at +200 odds for her portrayal of Princess Diana. She’s now +450 odds and the fourth on the betting board.

Penelope Cruz from “Parallel Mothers” had a slight downtick from +1400 to +1600 odds as the biggest longshot to win Best Actress at the 2022 Oscars.

Without a manuscript, there’s really no blueprint for a motion picture, which is why the Academy Awards honors screenwriters in two different categories. Paul Thomas Anderson is the front runner at the 2022 Oscars to win Best Original Screenplay with ‘Licorice Pizza’, and Jane Campion is the huge favorite with ‘The Power of the Dog’ to win Best Adapted Screenplay, which is based on a novel by Thomas Savage.

At last year’s Oscars, Emerald Fennell won “Promising Young Woman” by Emerald Fennell won Best Original Screenplay. Christopher Hampton and Florian Zeller won Best Adapted Screenplay with “the Father”, which was based on a stage play by Zeller.

Original Screenplay: Anderson, Branagh, McKay

Anderson earned his fifth writing nomination with ‘Licorice Pizza’, which is another 70s-era film set in the Valley with newcomers Cooper Hoffman and Alana Haim. He has never won an Oscars for any of his previous screenplays, which include some gems. Anderson earned two nominations for Best Original Screenplay with ‘Boogie Nights’ (1997) and ‘Magnolia’ (1999) in the late 1990s. He earned two nods for Best Adapted Screenplay with ‘There Will Be Blood’ (2007) and ‘Inherent Vice'(2014). ‘Licorice Pizza’ is the betting favorite at BetMGM at -155 odds to win Best Original Screenplay at the 2022 Oscars and secure a first-writing win for Anderson

Kenneth Branagh wrote and directed a personal story and coming-of-age tale about growing up in Northern Ireland in the late 1960s amidst the Troubles between Catholics and Protestants. ‘Belfast’ is the closest competition for ‘Licorice Pizza’ at +160 odds to win Best Original Screenplay.

Adam McKay earned his third writing nod with his satirical take on the end of the world with ‘Don’t Look Up’, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, and Meryl Streep. This asteroid disaster flick is currently available on Netflix, but it’s only +700 odds to win. McKay won Best Adapted Screenplay with ‘The Big Short’ in 2016.

‘King Richard’ written by Zach Baylin and ‘The Worst Person in the World’ penned by Eskil Vogt and Joachim Trier are the long shots on the betting board for Original Screenplay.

Adapted Screenplay: Anyone Upset Campion?

This year’s scripts for Best Adapted Screenplay include source material from three novels and a short story by Haruki Murakami.

‘The Power of the Dog’ is the betting favorite at -500 odds to win Best Adapted Screenplay by Campion, which is based on a thrilling western novel by Thomas Savage, that takes place in Montana in the 1920s.

‘CODA’ is a touching story about a young woman who wants to go off to college to study music, but she’s from a small fishing village and has two deaf parents. Sian Heder penned the screenplay, but it’s based on a French film titled ‘La Famille Belier’ from 2014. ‘CODA’ and Heder has the closest competition for Campion in the Best Adapted Screenplay category at +650 odds.

‘The Lost Daughter’ was written and directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, which is based on a novel by Elena Ferrante. Gyllenhaal earned her first writing nomination, but she’s +800 odds to pull off an upset.

‘Dune’ is based on the fantastic sci-fi novel by Frank Herbert. The adaption by Jon Spaihts, Denis Villeneuve and Eric Roth earned a nomination, but the trio are long shots at +1200 odds.

‘Drive My Car’ is based on a short story from Murakami, who is revered as the greatest living Japanese fiction writer. Ryusuke Hamaguchi and Takamasa Oe adapted the short story for the big screen, but they’re the biggest long shot on the board at +1400 odds.

A seven-time Super Bowl champion is teaming up with three Oscar-winning actresses in a new film. Tom Brady has been retired for only a couple of weeks before the ex-quarterback found a new project as a film producer of a sports movie. Brady will produce and play himself in the upcoming film ’80 for Brady’ for Paramount that also stars Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, Rita Moreno, and Sally Field.

’80 for Brady’ is produced and developed by Donna Gigliotti from Endeavor Content in conjunction with Brady’s company 199 Productions. The new project from Brady is inspired by the true story of four lifelong New England Patriots fans who go on a road trip to watch their favorite football player in Super Bowl 51.

If you’re a Patriots fan, then you’re well aware of the epic comeback in Super Bowl 51 against the Atlanta Falcons. The Patriots trailed 28-3 at halftime, yet stormed back to win 34-28 and set a record for largest comeback in Super Bowl history. The Patriots shut out the Falcons in the second half, and Atlanta’s defense imploded while giving up 31 unanswered points.

80 for Brady

Emily Halpern and Sarah Haskins made a name for themselves for co-writing the teen coming-of-age comedy ‘Booksmart’ from 2019. Halpern and Haskins penned the original draft, which is inspired by four friends who embark on a zany adventure and road trip to the Super Bowl.

NRG Stadium in Houston hosted Super Bowl 51. In the upcoming film, the quartet of ladies road trip from New England to Texas for an adventure of a lifetime.

The ensemble cast of ’80 for Brady’ includes four iconic actresses. Fields, Fonda, and Moreno previously won Oscars, while Tomlin had been nominated.

Kyle Marvin and Michael Covino penned an updated draft of the script. Marvin will direct the film and he co-wrote the final script with Covino, who is his executive producing partner. Marvin will appear in the upcoming Apple+ series ‘We Crashed’ about the rise and fall of WeWork, which also stars Jared Leto and Anne Hathaway.

Filming for the ’80 for Brady’ movie will begin the spring. Paramount did not specify a release date, but it’s expected to debut in 2022.

Ariana DeBose is the betting favorite at the 2022 Oscars to win Best Supporting Actress for her role in the musical reboot of “West Side Story” at -350 odds. Kirsten Dunst from “The Power of the Dog” is the closest competitor at +300 odds to win Best Supporting Actress, which also saw nominations for Aunjanue Ellis, Jessie Buckley, and Judi Dench.

Dench earned he eighth nomination for “Belfast” and her third Best Supporting Actress nod. She’s the only actress in this category who previously won an Oscar. Dench won Best Supporting Actress from playing the Queen of England in “Shakespeare in Love” at the 1998 Oscars.

2022 OSCARS BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS ODDS
  • Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) -350
  • Kirsten Dunst (The Power of the Dog) +300
  • Aunjanue Ellis (King Richard) +1000
  • Jessie Buckley (The Lost Daughter) +2000
  • Judi Dench (Belfast) +2500

Korean actress Youn Yuh-jung won Best Supporting Actress at the 2021 Oscars for her role as the eccentric grandmother in “Minari”, and this year Dench gets recognition for her role in “Belfast” as the grandmother.

Ariana DeBose -350

Ariana DeBose earned a coveted Tony nomination in the Donna Summer musical. She made a splash in the original cast of “Hamilton” on Broadway. In “West Side Story”, DeBose joined the cast as Anita for her triple-threat ability as an actor, singer, and dancer.

DeBose won at the Golden Globes for her stunning role as Anita, and the public has been backing her as the favorite to win Best Supporting Actress at the 2022 Oscars at -350 odds.

Steven Spielberg shifted gears by directing a musical with an updated version of “west Side Story,” which earned him a nomination for Best Director.

Kirsten Dunst +300

“The Power of the Dog” earned 12 nominations at the 2022 Oscars, which is more than any other film. Dunst was one of those 12 with her first nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Dunst is a former child actor who you might’ve missed playing Tom Hanks’ daughter in “Bonfire of the Vanities” in 1990. She made a name for herself in “Interview with a Vampire” in 1994 with an outstanding performance as Claudia.

Dunst is widely known for her comedy roles like “Drop Dead Gorgeous” and “Bring It On.” She also played Mary Jane in “Spider-Man 3” and delivered an on-screen kiss that people are still talking about. She’s credited as the “manic pixie dream girl” in Cameron Crowe’s “Elizabethtown” in 2005.

Dunst is only +300 odds to win Best Supporting Actress for her role of Rose Gordon in “The Power of the Dog.” She’s in the perfect spot to pull off an upset, especially if “The Power of the Dog” sweeps all of their categories.

Aunjanue Ellis +1000

Aunjanue Ellis made a name for herself as a Shakespearian thespian. In the 1990s, she landed the role in “The Tempest” that also featured Patrick Stewart. The versatile stage actress has a lengthy list of television and film roles. Ellis is probably most known for her role of Mary Ann Fisher in the Ray Charles biopic.

In “King Richard”, Ellis played a real-life person as Brandy Price Williams, the mother and coach of tennis superstars Venus and Serena Williams. Ellis more than held her own in scenes with the Williams sisters and he co-star Will Smith, who has the inside track to winning Best Actor. BetMGM listed Ellis as a mid-tiered long shot at +1000 odds to win her first Oscar.

Jessie Buckley +2000

Jessie Buckley is originally from Ireland and she started her career when she was the runner-up on a TV talent show on the BBC. She played an aspiring country-western singer from Glasgow, Scotland in “Wild Rose” in 2018. Buckley recently appeared in Season 4 of “Fargo” as a nurse with a murky past.

In “Lost Daughter”, Buckley plays a younger version of Olivia Colman in flashback scenes. Colman is a long shot to win Best Actress this year, along with Buckley at Best Supporting Actress at +2000 odds.

Judi Dench +2500

Dame Judi Dench did not get many lines in “Belfast”, that did not deny the Academy from nominating her for Best Supporting Actress. Dench plays the role of the grandmother in Kenneth Branagh’s coming of age film. She nailed a Northern Irish accent, which is not surprising considering she’s one of the greatest actresses of all time.

Dench previously won Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth I in “Shakespeare in Love” in 1998. She earned six nods since then, but has not been nominated since “Philomena” in 2013.

Dench is the longest long shot on the 2022 Oscars betting board at +2500 odds to win Best Supporting Actress.

“The Power of the Dog” has two actors vying for Best Supporting Actor at the 2022 Oscars, but Kodi Smit-McPhee is the betting favorite at -350 odds, and Jesse Plemons is one of the long shots at +1600. Troy Kotsur, JK Simmons, and newcomer Ciaran Hinds were also recognized by the Academy for their supporting roles.

2022 Oscars Odds Best Supporting Actor Kodi Smit-McPhee Troy Kotsur JK Simmons Jesse Plemons

“The Power of the Dog” is a massive magnet for nominations this year at the 94th Academy Awards with 12 total nods. Their cast is stacked, but here’s one of those rare instances in which two actors from the same film are competing for the golden statue.

2022 OSCARS BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR ODDS
  • Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Power of the Dog) -350
  • Troy Kotsur (CODA) +375
  • Ciaran Hinds (Belfast)     +500
  • Jesse Plemons (The Power of the Dog) +1600
  • JK Simmons (Being the Ricardos) +2500

Last year, “Judas and the Black Messiah” faced a similar situation with two actors up for Best Supporting Actor, but in the end Daniel Kaluuya won and edged out castmate Lakeith Stanfield.

JK Simmons is the only nominee who previously won at the Oscars, with a Best Supporting Actor win in “Whiplash” from 2015.

Kodi Smit-McPhee -350

Kodi Smit-McPhee is an actor from Australia who first made a name for himself 12 years ago in the post-apocalypse film “The Road”, which was based on a Cormac McCarthy novel. Marvel Comics fans know Smit-McPhee for his role as the Nightcrawler in “X-Men: Apocalypse” from 2016.

In a film review of “The Power of the Dog” in The Guardian, Peter Bradshaw gushed about his performance. “Smit-McPhee brings something inscrutably complex and reserved to his character’s behaviour,” wrote Bradshaw.

Smit-McPhee is the front runner to win the Best Supporting Actor at the 2022 Oscars at -350 odds according to BetMGM.

Troy Kotsur +375

CODA is a touching film about a young woman med Ruby who wants to leave her hometown of Gloucester, Massachusetts to continue her education at the Berklee School of Music. However, but both of her parents are hearing impaired, so she’s torn between providing care for them but tormented by struggling to find her own place in the world.

Troy Kotsur is a deaf actor who plays the role of Frank Rossi. He’s a fisherman and the father of Ruby, but he’s fiercely independent and wants to start his own business.

Kotsur made history as the first deaf actor to earn a nomination at the Oscars. Kotsur is also the closest competition against Smith-McPhee in the Best Supporting Actor category at +375 odds. If anyone can pull off a big upset this year, it’s Kotsur.

Ciaran Hinds +500

Kenneth Branagh wrote and directed “Belfast”, which is a personal story about growing up in Northern Ireland in the late 1960s. “Belfast” is coming of age film that’s punctuated by The Troubles and street riots between Catholics and Protestants.

You might recognize Ciaran Hinds from “Game of Thrones”, where he played the role of Mance Rayder. In “Belfast”, Hinds is the loving and wise grandfather to the young protagonist Buddy.

Jesse Plemons +1600

Plemons got his big break as a football player on “Friday Night Lights”, and later on in “Breaking Bad” as the scary character of Todd Alquist. He also had a stand out role in the second season of “Fargo.” He most recently held his own in “The Irishman”, which had a stacked cast of heavyweights including Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino.

Plemons was one of a dozen nominations in “The Power of the Dog”, which has the inside track to win Best Picture and Best Director with Jane Campion.

In the Best Supporting Actor category, Plemons is a long shot at +1600 odds compared to Smit-McPhee who is the heavy favorite at the Oscars.

JK Simmons +2500

“Being the Ricardos” earned three acting nominations with Nicole Kidman installed as the betting favorite to win Best Actress, and Javier Bardem as the long shot to win Best Actor. However, we think that JK Simmons had the most outstanding performance out of the three thespians nominated.

Simmons is a consummate character actor and he’s the only one of the other nominees who has secured a victory at the Oscars. In 2015, Simmons earned his only other nomination and win for Best Supporting Actor with “Whiplash”, for his role as the hard-ass music teacher.

This time, Simmons portrays a real person and actor William Frawley. Simmons gave a standout performance as the hard-drinking actor behind the role of Fred Mertz in the popular sitcom “I Love Lucy.” He does not get a lot of screen time, but Simmons crushes every scene he’s in.

Will Smith heads into the 2022 Oscars as the consensus betting favorite to win Best Actor at -330 odds for “King Richard”, where he played Richard Williams â€â€?the hard-nosed father of future tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams. Benedict Cumberbatch, Andrew Garfield, Denzel Washington, Javier Bardem also earned nominations this year, with Cumberbatch and Garfield with an outside shot at pulling off the upset against Smith.

King Richard Will Smith 2022 oscars Best Actor odds Denzel Washington Andrew Garfield Benedict Cumberbatch Javier Bardem

The nominations for Best Actor at the Oscars covers a lot of bases from the sporting world, to Broadway, to Shakespeare, to a classic western, and old-school Hollywood sitcoms.

2022 OSCARS – BEST ACTOR ODDS
  • Will Smith (King Richard) -330
  • Benedict Cumberbatch (The Power of the Dog) +330
  • Andrew Garfield (tick, tick… BOOM!) +550
  • Denzel Washington (The Tragedy of Macbeth) +2000
  • Javier Bardem (Being the Ricardos) +3500

All five actors earned previous nominations for Best Actor, and Washington is the only one with a victory. Both Washington and Bardem previously won Oscars for in the Best Supporting Actor category, but Bardem seeks his first win as a Best Actor.

Will Smith -330

Will Smith has been shutout at the Oscars multiple times in the past, but he finally has the inside track to winning Best Actor for the first time this year playing the controversial father to tennis superstars Serena and Venus Williams. Smith earned nods for “Ali” in 2002 as boxing legend Muhammad Ali, and as a homeless single-father in the “The Pursuit of Happyness” in 2007.

The difference between this year’s nomination and Smith’s previous two nods are that neither “Ali” or “The Pursuit of Happyness” were nominated for Best Picture. Although “King Richard” earned a nomination in 2022, it’s still a long shot at Best Picture at +2000 odds.

Smith began his long journey in show business as a hip-hop performer. He leveraged his fame as a rapper into his own sitcom, “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”, but he’s since developed into a bona fide movie star. One of his best performances — from the film adaption of “Six Degrees of Separation” — never earned him a nod, even though it’s a seminal role and one of his best single pieces of work as a thespian.

Smith holds a wide edge over the chase pack at the 2022 Oscars as the betting favorite at -330 odds to win Best Actor.

Benedict Cumberbatch +330

Cumberbatch is the Michael Caine of his generation because it feels like he’s in three films a year. The British actor been super busy ever since his first Best Actor nomination with the “The Imitation Game” in 2015 for his portrayal of tortured genius Alan Turing.

Cumberbatch earned one of 12 different nominations for “The Power of the Dog”, which is the betting favorite to win Best Picture and Best Director by Jane Campion. Out of his fellow nominees, Cumberbatch has the closest shot at upsetting Smith in the Best Actor category.

Cumberbatch has undertaken numerous roles in his short career, but he rarely tries to repeat himself. In this potential award-winning performance, Cumberbatch plays a fearsome, alpha-male ranch owner in Montana during the 1920s. He even went full-on method during filming of Campion’s western and didn’t shower or bathe for weeks on end to stay in character.

If you’re feeling frisky, you can fire away at Cumberbatch to upset Smith at +330 odds.

Andrew Garfield +550

Garfield is a British stage actor, but a large segment of the population only knows him for his role of Peter Parker in numerous Spider-Man films. Garfield earned his first nomination for Best Actor with “Hacksaw Ridge” in 2017. He added a second nod with “Tick, Tick… Boom!” — directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda (“Hamilton”) — about how playwright Jonathan Larson struggled in his late 20s before he eventually wrote the massive hit “Rent”.

Garfield gives a stunning performance as Larson, who is stuck waiting tables at the Moondance Diner in NYC while awaiting for his career to take off, but he’s stricken with writer’s block while rushing to complete a song for his long-waited original rock musical before his 30th birthday.

Garfield is +550 odds to win Best Actor, and he’s within striking distance of an upset, but it’s probably not going to happen with Cumberbatch and Smith ahead of him.

Denzel Washington +2000

I remember a year ago when a screenwriter friend sent me a text message saying, “Seriously, no joke. Denzel Washington is doing a Coen brothers movie about Shakespeare!” It’s one of those things that makes you shake your head in bewilderment about Hollywood, but enter “The Tragedy of Macbeth.”

Joel Coen wrote and directed a spartan version of Macbeth with Washington in the title role as Lord McBeth and Frances McDormand as Lady Macbeth. The black and white cinematography is haunting and gripping, but Washington is relentless with his tormented rendition of Macbeth.

Washington previously won Best Supporting Actor with “Glory” in 1990. He had seven nominations for Best Actor with a victory for “Training Day” in 2002. It’s been two decades since his last win, but he’s a long shot as Lord Macbeth at +2000 odds. You can watch “The Tragedy of Macbeth” via Apple+.

Javier Bardem +3500

Bardem earned his fourth-career nomination as Cuban-born musician and actor Ricky Ricardo in “Being the Ricardos”. Bardem won Best Supporting Actor as the terrorizing hit man with a disturbing hair cut in “No Country for Old Men” in 2008. That iconic role (and hair cut!) has been tough to top, but Bardem took a huge gamble to play the philandering husband to Lucille Ball. “Being the Ricardos” captures a stressful week on the set of their hit sitcom “I Love Lucy”.

Nicole Kidman is the massive favorite to win Best Actress at the 2022 Oscars as Ball, but Bardem is the moon shot here at +3500 odds to win Best Actor.

Biopics are usually cat nip for voters at the Academy Awards, so it’s not shocking to see three main roles based on real people nominated at the 2022 Oscars for Best Actress, including Nicole Kidman as the betting favorite at +120 odds for her portrayal of Lucille Ball in “Being the Ricardos.”

Best Actress 2022 Oscars Odds Jessica Chastain Nicole Kidman Olivia Colman Penelope Cruz Kristen Stewart
Jessica Chastain, Kristen Stewart, Nicole Kidman, Oliva Colman, and Penelope Cruz were nominated for Best Actress at the 2022 Oscars. (Image: Variety)

Kristen Stewart is the second favorite on the board at +200 odds to win Best Actress at the Oscars for her haunting role in “Spencer” where the American actress dons a posh English accent to play Princess Diana.

2022 OSCARS – BEST ACTRESS ODDS
  • Nicole Kidman (Being the Ricardos) +120
  • Kristen Stewart (Spencer) +200
  • Olivia Colman (The Lost Daughter) +400
  • Jessica Chastain (The Eyes of Tammy Faye) +500
  • Penelope Cruz (Parallel Mothers) +1400

Jessica Chastain is the other notable role in the biopic “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” about the wife of TV evangelist Jim Bakker.

Meanwhile, Olivia Colman and Penelope Cruz are two former winners who are both seeking their second Oscar.

Nicole Kidman +120

Kidman won Best Actress at the 2002 Oscars for her role as Virginia Woolf in “The Hours”, and now she has a chance for a second win twenty years later. Kidman has five nominations including four for Best Actress and one for Best Supporting Actress.

“Being the Ricardos”, directed by Aaron Sorkin and starring Javier Bardem as Desi Arnaz, gives a behind the scenes glimpse of a tumultuous week in the life Lucille Ball. Arnaz and Ball shoot an episode of their hit show “I Love Lucy”, while Ball fends off possible cancellation after she’s accused of being a communist, even though she was previously cleared during the McCarthy hearings.

Kidman nails the accent along with Ball’s wit and comedic timing. Hollywood insiders were miffed that a film released on Amazon would have the inside track to winning a major award at the Oscars. After Kidman won Best Actress at the Golden Globes, she emerged as the favorite at +120 odds to win at the Oscars.

Kristen Stewart +200

Don’t sleep on “Spencer” if you like creepy castles and a kick-ass soundtrack from Radiohead’s Johnny Greenwood. Stewart plays a fragile Princess Diana during a Christmas getaway with the royal family in 1991.

Stewart earned her first-ever nomination at the Oscars with a strong portrayal of Princess Diana under duress. She struggles with an eating disorder and an unfaithful Price Charles, while being alone and isolated in the constricting confines of palace life and dreadful obligations as a member of the royal family. She’s also haunted by the ghost of Anne Boleyn and considers suicide.

Stewart is the second favorite on the 2022 Oscars betting board at +200 odds to win Best Actress.

Olivia Colman (The Lost Daughter) +400

Colman earned her third nomination for Best Actress in the last four years. She won her first Oscar in 2019 in “The Favourite” as Queen Anne in the early 1700s. She also recently earned rave reviews for her role in “The Crown” series as Queen Elizabeth.

“The Lost Daughter” is a departure for Colman, because it’s not a period piece and she’s not playing the Queen of England. Instead she plays a professor who struggled with motherhood and she confronts her past while on holiday in Italy. She meets a young mother on the beach, who triggers flashbacks of her own failing relationship with her two daughters.

Colman will try to pull off an upset and win her second Best Actress award at the Oscars since 2019, and you back her at +400 odds.

Jessica Chastain (The Eyes of Tammy Faye) +500

If you were around in the 1980s, then you’re aware of the power of televangelists and the scandal involving Jim Bakker and his freakish wife, Tammy Faye.

Jessica Chastain does not hold back in her eye-popping role in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye”, where you get Tammy Faye’s perspective of the rise and fall of the Bakkers and the Praise the Lord Network. Yes, even Tammy Faye got the rags to riches to rags treatment by Hollywood, with Chastain unleashing a gutsy performance between belting out Christian songs and putting on a Bible-themed puppet show for kids.

Chastain had previously earned nominations in 2012 for Best Supporting Actress in “The Help”, and in 2013 for Best Actress in “Zero Dark Thirty”, but she lost both years. In “The Eyes of Tammy Faye”, Chastain prays she pulls off an upset at +500 odds.

Penelope Cruz (Parallel Mothers) +1400

In 2007, Cruz made a huge splash with her role in “Volver” which earned her a nomination for Best Actress. In 2009, she won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her funny role in “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”, which was directed by Woody Allen. She earned another Best Actress nod in 2010 with “Nine” but failed to win.

Cruz earned her third Best Actress nomination and fourth-overall nod with “Parallel Mothers”, which is the latest film by renown Spanish director Pedro Almodovar. It’s the story about two pregnant women who develop a bond while in the maternity ward between a middle-aged Cruz and a frightened teenager. I’ll avoid spoilers and plot twists, but it’s a doozy from Almodovar. Cruz delivered another fantastic performance, but she’s a massive long shot at +1400 odds because very few people saw the film, which is in subtitles.

Early indications suggest that Jane Campion is the huge favorite at -750 odds to win Best Director for “The Power of the Dog” at the 2022 Oscars against Steven Spielberg, Kenneth Branagh, Paul Thomas Anderson, and Japan’s Ryusuke Hamaguchi.

Last year, Chloe Zhao with “Nomadland” became only the second woman to win an Academy Award for Best Director. Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman to win Best Director at the Oscars with “The Hurt Locker” in 2010.

2022 OSCARS – BEST DIRECTOR ODDS
  • Jane Campion (The Power of the Dog) -750
  • Steve Spielberg (West Side Story) +800
  • Kenneth Branagh (Belfast) +900
  • Ryusuke Hamaguchi (Drive My Car) +1200
  • Paul Thomas Anderson (Licorice Pizza) +1600

Campion has the inside track to become the third woman in the history of the Academy Awards to win Best Director, in a job that was dominated by men since the inception of Hollywood.

Jane Campion -750

Campion puts her unique stamp on the western trope with “The Power of the Dog”, which earned 12 nominations and the most nods at the 2022 Oscars. The three stars — Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, and Jesse Plemons — also earned acting nominations.

At this point, if Campion does not win Best Director, then it will be a huge upset at the Oscars. Oddsmakers installed Campion as the consensus favorite at -750 odds, and Spielberg is the closest competitor at +800 odds. That’s quite a huge gap between the top two directors on the betting board.

Campion earned her first nomination for Best Director with “The Piano” in 1994. She won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, but missed out on becoming the first woman to win in the Best Director category. It only took 28 years before she got her second chance. She also earned a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. “Power of the Dog” is based on a novel by Thomas Savage.

Steven Spielberg +800

Spielberg is one of Hollywood’s greatest living directors with seven Best Director nominations including two wins with “Schindler’s List” (1993) and “Saving Private Ryan” (1998). In his latest film, Spielberg takes a crack at a musical.

“West Side Story” originally began as a Broadway musical in 1957 before becoming a film in 1961. Over 60 years later, Spielberg rebooted the popular musical with a Latinx cast playing all the Puerto Rican characters. Don’t worry, almost all the original songs appear in the new version, but the song list was shuffled a bit with the addition of another song which the Sharks sing in a fight with the Jets.

Spielberg is +800 odds at this year’s Oscars to win his third golden statue for Best Director.

Kenneth Branagh +900

Branagh initially made a name for himself as a Shakespearian actor in the late 1980s. He was nominated for Best Actor and Best Director with “Henry V” in 1989, but did not win either time. He’s been nominated for an Oscar in six different categories, but never won the golden statue.

“Belfast” earned him three nods this year including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay. “Belfast” is his own personal story about a young boy growing up in Northern Ireland in the late 1960s during the onset of the “Troubles” when Protestants and Catholics clashed. Branagh dedicated “Belfast” to all the people who left Northern Ireland to seek a better life — much like his family who moved to England — and dedicated it to those who stayed behind — like his grandmother.

“Belfast” is filmed mostly in black and white and the cinematography gives it a gritty yet nostalgic vibe. It was important for Branagh to shot the film in his old neighborhood where he grew up.

Branagh is +900 odds to Best Director at the Oscars, but he’s really a long shot in this category and has a better chance of taking home his first Oscar in the screenwriting category.

Ryusuke Hamaguchi +1200

Every cinephile and movie nerd I spoke to raved about “Drive My Car”, which is directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi and based on a short story from Haruki Murakami. “Drive My Car” was also nominated for Best Picture, but it’s a long shot at +2500 odds. Hamaguchi is also a long shot to win Best Director at +1200 odds, but he’s the favorite to win Best International Feature Film at the 2022 Oscars.

“Drive My Car” clocks in at three hours, but it moves fast telling the story about a grieving actor who begrudgingly accepts a young woman as his chauffer to drive him to/from rehearsals for a rendition of Chekov’s play “Uncle Vanya”.

Paul Thomas Anderson +1600

No one loves the Valley more than Paul Thomas Anderson and his latest film is almost a love note to the Valley itself. Several of Anderson’s previous films are situated in the Valley including “Magnolia”, “Boogie Nights”, and “Punch Drunk Love” so it wasn’t a surprise that his latest work “Licorice Pizza” is situated in the Valley in the 1970s.

Anderson cast two first-time actors in the principal roles. Philip Seymour Hoffman and Anderson had a close friendship and working relationship before Hoffman died in 2013. Anderson cast his son, Cooper, in “Licorice Pizza” and there are several moments when you catch a glimpse at Cooper and think about the uncanny resemblance to his late father. Alana Haim is a musician by trade, but she gives a standout performance in “Licorice Pizza”, which is astounding considering its her acting debut.

Like most of Anderson’s films, “Licorice Pizza” has a kick-ass soundtrack and filled with deep cuts from the 1970s.
