Dynamo Kyiv played its first official matches after eight months, beating Fenerbahce in a double-legged Champions League second-round qualifier. Dynamo will now face Austrian side Sturm Graz for a place in the Champions League play-offs, the final step before the group stage.

After a 0-0 draw in Lodz (Poland), where Dynamo currently plays its European home matches following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Kyiv team won 2-1 over Fenerbahce in Istanbul. Part of the supporters at the Sukru Saracoglu stadium offered shameful scenes inside the ground, chanting Vladimir Putin’s name after Dynamo’s goals.

Vitalii Buyalskyi opened the scoring in the 57th minute, then Attila Szalai got the equalizer for 10-men Fenerbahce in the 88th minute. The match went to extra-time, with Oleksandr Karavaev netting Dynamo’s second in the 114th minute to silence the home crowd.

Infuriated by the Putin chanting during the match, Dynamo’s manager Mircea Lucescu chose an original way to protest. The 76-year-old refused to attend the usual post-match press conference. He only spoke to the game’s broadcaster in a flash interview right after the final whistle saying “I didn’t expect the chanting. It’s such a shame it happened,”

Given the political context, their eight-month official break from football and their incapacity to make transfers, Dynamo was regarded as the outsider in the confrontation with Fenerbahce. After the 0-0 draw in Lodz, the Turkish side was at -500 to qualify, with Dynamo at +270.

Olympiacos, out in shock 4-0 defeat vs Maccabi Haifa

The Greek champions went out of the Champions League early in the season after getting beaten 4-0 on home soil by Maccabi Haifa from Israel. Olympiakos drew 1-1 in the first leg and was hoping to build on the result to qualify. It didn’t go according to plan, as Maccabi proved superior at all levels.

Ferencvaros recovered a 2-1 home deficit and won 4-1 against Slovan Bratislava in Slovakia to progress, while last season’s Champions League surprise pack, Sheriff Tiraspol, also went through after a 1-0 win on aggregate over Maribor of Slovenia.

The next preliminary round in the Champions League takes place on 2/3 August (first leg) and 7/8 August (second leg).

The Ukrainian giants played in France, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Poland, Turkey, and Romania, among others. All the money resulting from their games went to charities supporting war victims and refugees. The initiative for the tour belonged to Dynamo manager Mircea Lucescu, who started making efforts for it to happen soon after Putin’s troops invaded on 24 February.

“It’s really important that people all around the world don’t forget what’s happening in Ukraine,” Lucescu told Online Gambling.

“We are trying to make a statement through our football. It’s really important for the people to be together during these times,” he stressed.

“Not only football fans attend these games. Refugees come so they can be with their own. Also, charities are supported thanks to these events. Football can move hearts and inspire hope,” Lucescu concluded.

For the friendly game on 29 July, Everton will offer Ukrainian refugees free tickets. The Merseyside club announced that all proceeds from the game, including donations from supporters, will go to humanitarian charities supporting Ukraine. The club also contributed with a $600k donation to the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal in March.

Dynamo hopes to reach the Champions League group stage

Almost eight months after playing their previous official match, Dynamo kick-started its campaign with a 0-0 draw against Fenerbahce, in the Champions League second qualifying round.

The clash took place in Lodz, Poland, with the second leg scheduled to take place in Istanbul on Wednesday.

Dynamo is at +270 to reach the third qualifying phase of the Champions League, while Fenerbahce sits at -500.

The Ukrainian domestic season is planned to kick off next month in the western part of the country and Kyiv, with no spectators allowed at matches.

Dynamo reached the Champions League group stage in 2020 and 2021. In February, the Ukrainian league was stopped following the Russian invasion, with all results canceled for last season at domestic level.

The Russian Football Federation is considering the possibility of switching to the Asian Confederation following the heavy sanctions imposed by the European Football governing body on the Russian football teams at all levels. Currently, Russian football is banned from featuring in any continental competitions after Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24.

Russia

Dmitry Pirog, a member of the Russian parliament, told state-owned sports broadcaster Match TV that the “time has come to seriously think about switching to the Asian football confederation.”

Pirog asked football authorities to consider the future of the Russian teams on the international stage given the fact that UEFA’s ban isn’t certain to end anytime soon. UEFA applied new sanctions to Russia, not allowing the country to apply bids for the 2028 and 2032 European championships, which they were ready to organize.

In addition, the Russian men’s national team has been excluded from the Nations League, while the women’s side won’t be able to participate in the Euros this summer.

Vyacheslav Koloskov, a former president of the Russian FA, said he’s against a move to the Asian Confederation because such a decision would mean the “death of Russian football … We would never return to the European family.”

If Russia decides to act and change its confederation participation, it wouldn’t be a first in world football. Previously, Israel moved from Asia to UEFA, with Kazakhstan doing the same. Australia went from participating in Oceania to Asia in 2006 in an attempt to raise the level of the opponents the national and club teams were playing in official matches.

Russia hosted the World Cup in 2018, reaching the quarterfinals. They went out after a dramatic penalty shootout against Croatia, the eventual runners-up in the tournament. After invading Ukraine, Russia was banned from competing in all UEFA and FIFA competitions at every level. As a consequence, the men’s national team lost the right to enter the playoffs for qualification for the Qatar 2022 edition of the World Cup.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the owner of Ineos, had submitted a $5 billion offer on Friday morning, just hours before the announcement about Boehly being the preferred bidder came out. Boehly’s bidding group also includes the likes of Mark Walters, who’s the other Dodgers co-owner, and Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss. According to The Athletic, their consortium hasn’t yet entered into an exclusivity agreement regarding Chelsea.

The Boehly bid exceeds $5 billion and it includes a $1.9 billion pledge to invest in club infrastructure and the Stamford Bridge stadium. US-based merchant bank Raine, who is in charge of Chelsea’s sale, values the club at around $3.15 billion.

After Roman Abramovich put Chelsea up for sale, various bidders voiced their interest. Only two other bids, involving ex-Liverpool chairman Sir Martin Broughton and the Boston Celtics co-owner Stephen Pagliuca, were accepted. On Friday, Pagliuca was told his consortium will not be named as the preferred bidder to take over Chelsea ownership.

Boehly’s main competitor seemend to be late-bidder Ratcliffe, who only submitted his bid on Friday, following talks with Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck on Thursday.

“We are the only British bid. Our motives are simply to try and create a very fine club in London. We have no profit motive because we make our money in other ways,” Ratcliffe told The Times.

Roman Abramovich, who owns Chelsea since 2003, saw his UK assets frozen in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine because of his alleged privileged relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Akhmetov’s support included humanitarian aid to civilians, as well as support to the military. The billionaire instructed his people to send lorries filled with food, medicine, and other necessary goods to the affected areas around Ukraine and also bought military clothing, first aid kits, and protective equipment for the soldiers currently defending Ukraine.

“Every business of Rinat Akhmetov, his charitable foundation, and FC Shakhtar are doing everything possible to help people, the cities, and the state survive the war,” FC Shakhtar said in a statement. “In order to help as many people as possible, the directions of our aid are determined in coordination with the central and local authorities,” the club commented.

Akhmetov’s DTEK company, Ukraine’s largest private investor in the energy industry, supplied free electricity to medical institutions, military and law enforcement agencies, as well as bakeries in the Kyiv, Donetsk, and Dnipropetrovsk regions.

It also delivered 300 tons of coal so trains could evacuate people in Ukrzaliznytsia while another 100 tons went to support the needs of local communities. Since Russia invaded on Feb. 24, the Akhmetov Foundation donated more than 500K medicines and 60K food kits to people around Ukraine. According to estimates published on Shakhtar’s website, Akhmetov helped 720K people survive the war so far.

Shakhtar was forced to leave home in 2014

Shakhtar is a 13-time Ukrainian champion and was a UEFA Cup winner in 2009. The club moved away from Donetsk in the Donbas region and left behind its beautiful $300 million Donbas Arena in 2014 when conflict in the region broke out. Shakhtar relocated to Kyiv, the home of its archrival, Dynamo.

Shakhtar was leading the Ukrainian league when Russia invaded at the end of February. At the moment, the chances of the league resuming this season are virtually nil. Shakhtar was part of the same Champions League group as Real Madrid, Inter Milan, and Sheriff Tiraspol last autumn, but finished at the bottom of the group and was eliminated.

The 25-year-old striker was one of around 30 civilians whose bodies were found in a shallow grave discovered in a forest after the Ukrainian forces recaptured the village.

FIFPRO, the world players’ union, sent their condolences following Sukhenko’s death.

“We are mourning the loss of 25-year-old former Ukrainian football player and member, Oleksandr Sukhenko, who was reportedly killed with his mother and father in Motyzhyn, a town west of Kyiv. May they rest in peace,” the union’s message on Twitter read.

Sukhenko’s mother was the mayor of Motyzhyn

“There have been Russian occupiers here. They tortured and murdered the whole family of the village head,” said Anton Herashchenko, a Ukrainian Internal Affairs official, about the atrocities the Sukhenko family suffered.

Igor, the player’s father, was also involved in football, leading the rural club Kolos. Oleksandr helped many escape the village after the Russian troops invaded. The forward last played for regional club Kudrivka and had reached the second tier when he was wearing SK Chayka’s colors.

The inhabitants of Bucha, another town near Kyiv, have been tortured and killed, with mass graves being found after it was retaken from Russian troops. The Kremlin denied any accusations related to the murder of civilians in Bucha.

“This information must be seriously questioned,” Putin’s spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters. “From what we have seen, our experts have identified signs of video falsification and other fakes.”

“This is my second family, they helped people to the end, carried medicines, groceries. They were taken from their own house,” revealed Daria Belenitsyna about the Sukhenko family, also saying that Oleksandr was left without his phone and car by the Russian troops.

Sukhenko is not the first football player to be killed since Russia’s invasion started, with at least two others losing their lives.

Dynamo Kyiv’s U19 team has already been preparing in Romania for more than a week ahead of their game vs. Sporting Lisbon in the Youth League on April 6. Dynamo’s youngsters are camped at [Romanian club] FCSB’s training complex, but are expected to play Sporting at the recently inaugurated Rapid ground.

“It’s very important that the players send a message of peace and that they represent their country with pride. This is their way of maybe trying to lift the spirit at home too,” Lucescu told Online Gambling.

Dynamo’s first team members will train in Bucharest for the time being. Then, the plan is to have them tour Europe to play friendly matches against the likes of FC Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan, Borussia Dortmund, Sporting Lisbon, Benfica, Ajax, Basel, Legia Warsaw, or FCSB. The Ukrainian club sees its entire practice schedule as a charity mission, with the money resulting from the friendlies going to the victims of the war back home.

Dynamo will raise money for those affected by the war at home

Dynamo announced that all the games will be held under the slogan “Match for Peace. Stop the War!”

“The purpose of these matches is to inform the international community about the terrible war in Ukraine and to raise funds to support the Ukrainians who suffered from the war with the Russia aggressor,” the club explained.

“Dynamo will show the world that the Ukrainian people want peace and freedom by defending their own state in the war with the Russian aggressor-occupier,” a Dynamo spokesperson said. “Dynamo’s Ukrainian players will also use this tournament to get in shape for the World Cup playoffs in June. They will first face Scotland. Then, if they qualify, they will battle Wales for a spot at the World Cup in Qatar.

The Ukrainian league, where Dynamo was the defending champion, is unlikely to finish on the pitch this season. The season was interrupted because of Russia’s invasion just days before it was supposed to resume following the winter break.

Dynamo’s players spent the first day after the invasion in the club’s training camp outside Kyiv, then moved west to Lviv, where they only trained to keep their fitness.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Abramovich is understood to have developed red eyes, painful tearing, and peeling skin on his face and hands following the meeting at the beginning of the month. Another two Ukrainian negotiators experienced similar symptoms. Sources claim Abramovich has made a full recovery and is supporting peace talks again. During the initial talks, the oligarch insisted on the creation of humanitarian corridors and asked for other countries to be brought to the negotiating table.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the suspected attack on Abramovich and the two other negotiators was orchestrated by people in Russia who wanted to sabotage negotiations for peace. During his trip to Ukraine, Abramovich met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, but there aren’t official or unofficial reports about the political leader being affected by similar symptoms to those of Abramovich.

Abramovich, everyone’s friend

Described by the UK government as “a prominent Russian businessman and pro-Kremlin oligarch,” Abramovich saw all of his assets frozen in the UK and EU. The same sanction wasn’t applied in the US even though a draft for a similar decision was put together. Zelensky himself asked President Biden to avoid banning Abramovich because of his involvement in the peace talks.

Despite denying any association with the Russian regime, Abramovich is considered to have benefited from his privileged relationship with the Kremlin through tax breaks for his companies and his contracts with the state.

According to The Times, Abramovich also met President Putin recently and presented him with a handwritten note from Zelensky. The letter outlined certain terms Ukraine would consider agreeing to in order to end the war. “Tell him I will trash them,” Putin allegedly said after reading the note.

Cease-fire talks are expected to resume in Turkey on Tuesday, but Western leaders doubt Russia will end hostilities for the time being.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Zelensky believes Abramovich could help as a go-between in the peace talks with Russia.

Two weeks ago, officials at the US Treasury Department put together a list of sanctions aimed at blocking Abramovich’s interests, but the draft didn’t develop into an official document.

“For the negotiations, and in the interest of them succeeding, it is not helpful commenting on the process nor [on] Mr. Abramovich’s involvement,” a spokesperson for the Russian billionaire said in a statement. “As previously stated, based on requests, including from Jewish organizations in Ukraine, he has been doing all he can to support efforts aimed at restoring peace as soon as possible,” the statement added.

According to the Independent, Abramovich “feels he can try to use his standing in the Russian business community to impact the talks between the two nations.” It remains unclear whether Abramovich has spoken directly to President Putin since the start of the Russian invasion in Ukraine. US officials told the WSJ that there is no evidence Abramovich has been helpful in the talks between Ukraine and Russia so far.

The doctor was on her shift at the hospital. She showed Beckham’s 71.5 million followers how newborns, their mothers, and other pregnant women survived in a basement following Russia’s invasion. Iryna also posted images of babies in the intensive care unit as they were fighting to survive while being connected to oxygen generators. The doctor didn’t hold back from telling her patients’ stories to highlight the trauma the entire city is living under since the start of the war.

Iryna confessed she is working “24/7” to make sure the kids and their mothers are well taken care of. She is certain that none of the medical staff members will “give up.” Beckham is an ambassador for Unicef since 2005 and has constantly encouraged his followers to contribute to the charity. Unicef donated oxygen generators to the improvised basement hospital in Kharkiv and aims to support the people of Ukraine during the horrible times they are going through.

Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city after Kyiv, has been heavily bombed for more than three weeks now.

Beckham is part-owner of Inter Miami in the MLS and is a global soccer icon, having represented England at the national team level and the likes of Manchester United, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan, and the LA Galaxy in club football.
