Rybakina, born in Russia but playing for Kazakhstan, completed an unlikely run as she entered the tournament with odds of +10000 at major sportsbooks.

Rybakina uses power game to win first Grand Slam

Those odds were justified. Rybakina came into Wimbledon with the No. 23 ranking in the world, making her the lowest-ranked woman to win the tournament since Venus Williams did so as the No. 31 player in the WTA rankings back in 2007.

The 23-year-old won behind a power game that includes one of the biggest serves on the WTA tour. Rybakina leads the tour with 221 aces on the season, including 53 at Wimbledon.

“It is frustrating to play someone that serves really big and doesn’t give you the chance sometimes to take that break,?Jabeur said afterwards. “It wasn’t meant to be.?/p>

Rybakina said she was “happy that it finished?in her post-match interview, and later explained her feelings after the win.

“When I was giving [a] speech in the end, I was thinking, ‘I’m going to cry right now,’ but somehow I hold it,?Rybakina said later. “Maybe later when I’m going to be alone in the room, I’m going to cry nonstop. I don’t know.?/p>

The victory put Rybakina on the map for future Grand Slams, including the upcoming US Open. DraftKings Sportsbook lists Rybakina as a +1400 pick to win in New York this September. World No. 1 Iga Swiatek (+250) remains the favorite for the US Open, ahead of Naomi Osaka (+600) and Simona Halep (+900).

Djokovic unlikely to play in US Open due to vax status

On Sunday, Novak Djokovic won his fourth straight Wimbledon title ?his seventh overall and his 21st Grand Slam ?by beating Nick Kyrgios in four sets. Once again, Djokovic fell behind early before rallying to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).

In key moments, Djokovic remained calm and focused, while Kyrgios showed the frustration and vulnerability that’s plagued him during big points throughout his career.

“It’s weird, I felt like he didn’t do anything amazing today,?Kyrgios said afterward. “But he was just so composed. That’s what I was just thinking to myself. In big moments, it just felt like he was never rattled. I feel like that’s his greatest strength.?/p>

Djokovic started Wimbledon as the clear favorite and never looked back. DraftKings now lists him as the +150 pick to win the US Open as well. However, it currently seems unlikely that Djokovic will play in the tournament, which begins in late August.

“I’m not vaccinated and I’m not planning to get vaccinated, so the only good news I can have is them removing the mandated green vaccine card or whatever you call it to enter United States or exemption,?Djokovic said afterwards. “I don’t think exemption is realistically possible. If that is a possibility, I don’t know what exemption would be about.?/p>

If the United States doesn’t ease its restrictions on entry, and Djokovic doesn’t play, Russia’s Daniil Medvedev (+225) would likely become the favorite to defend his US Open title. Carlos Alcaraz (+400), Rafael Nadal (+550), and Alexander Zevrev (+900) would also be among the top picks to win the last Grand Slam of the year in Djokovic’s absence.

I recently moved from California to Colorado — or in betting terms — from a state where there’s no legalized online gambling to a state that legalized online gambling, including sports betting. As a sportswriter and so-called sports junkie, I had the rare and amazing opportunity to have a successful Sunday betting on the Tour de France, Wimbledon, F1, MLB, and the NBA Summer League.

Colorado is a progressive state, which became the second state to allow women to vote in 1893. In 2012, Colorado legalized recreational marijuana and the first retail stores opened in 2014. In 2019, the citizens of the state voted to legalize online gambling and sports betting in Colorado, which is one of the many reasons I relocated from California.

I moved into a new house the same week the Colorado Avalanche won the Stanley Cup. My new next-door neighbors flew an Avalanche flag on their front porch and invited me to join them watch the game on a gigantic TV set up in their backyard.

I’ve only been a resident of Colorado for a couple of weeks, but I already found myself enjoying mobile sports betting. On just the second Sunday in July, I had the opportunity to wager on five different sports. Here’s a synopsis of my Sunday grind with Colorado sports betting that includes basketball, baseball, cycling, auto racing, and tennis.

Tour de France: Luxembourg Long Shot

To become a successful bettor in the Tour de France, you must pay attention to the stage map. If it’s a flat stage, the top sprinters compete for the stage win. If it’s a mountain stage, then the climbers dominate. When it’s a hilly or punchy stage, then it gets weird and you bet on Belgian star Wout van Aert, who’s fast enough to hang with the sprinters and strong enough to keep up with the climbers in the mountains.

As a new Colorado resident, I finally had the opportunity to bet on each stage. I whiffed the first three stages when the riders I backed — including van Aert twice — finished in second place each time. I finally had a breakthrough when van Aert won Stage 4, and then got hot by picking the winners in Stage 6, Stage 7, and Stage 8.

Every shot of the TV coverage of Stage 9 in the Swiss Alps looked like a postcard or an outtake from “The Sound of Music.”  With the first mountain stage, the big dogs wanted to preserve their energy for later stages, so the consensus was that a team with zero chance to win the overall Tour de France would stage hunt and try to win with a breakaway.

I spread bets around on a couple of different riders, including Luxembourg’s Bob Jungels (AG2R Citroen) at +5000 odds. AG2R Citroen is one of the teams that hadn’t yet won a stage, and Jungels, who was looking good over the last week, appeared due for a win. Jungels nearly got caught by the chase pack, but held them off in the final kilometer to win his first stage on Le Tour. One sport down, one win.

Joker’s Wild at Wimbledon

Rafael Nadal pulled out of the Wimbledon semifinals due to a stomach injury, so the men’s final came down to Novak Djokovic versus Nick Kyrgios. I don’t watch tennis these days and never bet on it. But, it was tough to pass up an opportunity to back Djokovic, who was searching for a seventh Wimbledon men’s title and chasing Roger Federer’s record of eight. I didn’t get the best number at -350 odds, but that’s what happens when you bet chalk.

Jokerman got off to a slow start and dropped the first set to Kyrgios 6-4. It was a great start if you like underdogs, but luckily, I was watching the Tour de France and missed the start. Djokovic bounced back and won the next three sets, including a tiebreak in the fourth and final set. He slammed the door on a potential comeback from Kyrgios, who tried to force a fifth set where anything could happen. Djokovic secured his seventh Wimbledon victory since 2011. Two sports down, and two wins.

F1 Tips from the Bass Player

I know nothing about F1, but I can drop quotes from “Days of Thunder” with uncanny accuracy. I know “Days of Thunder” covers NASCAR and not Formula 1 racing, and that’s as far as my knowledge goes. When it comes to betting auto racing, I know zilch, but luckily I have friends and colleagues who know their F1.

My close friend Chris is a musician from Austin who’s an F1 aficionado. Chris played bass in several bands over the years, including Moving Matter and Heartbyrne (a Talking Heads tribute band). Most recently, he’s playing in a funk outfit called The A-Town Get Down.

Chris provided me with an inspiring tutorial, and I tailed his bets in the Austrian F1 Grand Prix. He said Max Verstappen from Red Bull is the favorite for a reason, but he expected it would be a good day for Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who started the season with wins in Bahrain and Australia. I consulted OG’s own Amy Calistri — another avid F1 fan — to confirm the picks, which she also liked. I made my first-ever F1 wagers with Verstappen (-225) and Leclerc (+330).

I only got to watch the last few laps, but I definitely understood the appeal. Whenever you place a bet on something, even a meaningless activity, it suddenly gains tremendous excitement due to the sweat equity. Verstappen finished in second place and lost by 1.5 seconds, but Leclerc took the checkered flag after overcoming mechanical problems. I split the bets, but still turned a profit. Three sports down, and three wins.

NBA Summer League: Grimes Shines

If you’re going to bet the NBA 2K23 Summer League in Las Vegas, you want to back teams with actual veterans who logged time in the league because they’re taking advantage of playing against rookies who are putting on a pro uniform for the first time.

The New York Knicks suck, but they have a lot of good, young players who are getting much-needed workouts in the Summer League because head coach Tom Thibodeau tends to give veterans the bulk of playing time. The Knicks are my hometown team so I’m familiar with their roster in Las Vegas, which includes dreamers hoping to latch on to a team, recently-drafted rookie Trevor Keels from Duke, and a couple of players who had sporadic playing time last season, including Jericho Sims and Quentin Grimes.

Grimes had a spectacular game the other night against the Golden State Warriors with 24 points and eight assists in 32 minutes. He followed it up with 24 points on 7-for-14 shooting — including five 3-pointers — in a 101-69 blowout against the Chicago Bulls on Sunday afternoon. The Knicks easily covered a -7 spread when they won by 32 points. Four sports down, and four wins.

Sunday Night Baseball: Yankees vs Red Sox

The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox are the fiercest rivalry in baseball and one of the greatest all-time sports rivalries. The two teams played a four-game series and ESPN broadcast the Yankees/Red Sox in prime time as part of their Sunday Night Baseball coverage. I backed my hometown Yankees at -150 on the money line, especially after they collapsed on Saturday in extra innings. The Yankees won the first two games, but the Sox were trying to tie up the series with back-to-back victories at Fenway Park.

Whenever the Yankees and Red Sox play, it’s a long and exhausting marathon. It seems like regular nine-inning games between these rivals take four+ hours to finish. I knew I’d be bogged down for the long haul, especially after a long day of sweating bets, but luckily primetime games air at 5 pm in the Mountain Time Zone.

The Yankees jumped out to a 4-0 lead thanks to a home run blast by Giancarlo Stanton. The Red Sox countered and cut the lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the second inning. Veteran Matt Carpenter — and his mustache inspired by Tom Selleck in “Magnum, PI” — slugged a short-porch home run to right field to put the Yankees up 6-2 in the top of the third.

The Red Sox didn’t flinch when they scored two more runs in the bottom of the inning. The Yankees’ bats went cold, and the Red Sox rallied from behind by scoring nine total unanswered runs. The Yankees lost 11-6 and the Red Sox pulled off another come-from-behind win. Those damn Sox cost me a perfect betting Sunday. Five sports complete. Overall, it was a profitable Sunday of sports betting in Colorado with four wins and just one loss.

Nick Kyrgios made it to the men’s final at Wimbledon in a walkover, as Rafael Nadal couldn’t physically play in their semifinal. If he wants to earn his first Grand Slam title, he’ll have to beat another legend of the game in Novak Djokovic on Sunday.

DraftKings Sportsbook rates Djokovic as the -390 favorite over Kyrgios (+300) in their match on Centre Court.

Comebacks becoming commonplace for Djokovic

Djokovic reached the Wimbledon final for the eighth time of his career by beating No. 9 seed Cam Norrie 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 in their semifinal matchup on Friday. While Djokovic fell behind by a set early, he never really seemed to be in trouble, and he dominated the remainder of the match to make yet another comeback at the All England Club.

“The more you experience these kind of situations, not the better you feel, but just more prepared you feel,?Djokovic said after the match. “It’s always really about handling your own nerves better than maybe your opponent is his own. This internal battle is always the greatest.?/p>

When Djokovic mentioned the upcoming battle with Kyrgios, the crowd jeered at the Australian’s name. The 27-year-old hasn’t endeared himself to the tennis world over the years, with his on-court antics, combative personality, and struggles with staying mentally engaged in matches combining to make him one of the least popular players on tour. Those factors have also caused him to struggle to reach the later rounds of major event.

Yet that shouldn’t lead anyone to overlook Kyrgios’ immense talent. Almost everyone agrees that Kyrgios can beat anyone in the world. He was 1-1 against Nadal at Wimbledon, which would have made their semifinal something of a rubber match. He’s also 2-0 against Djokovic, though both of those matches came on hard courts.

“There’s going to be a lot of fireworks, emotionally, from both,?Djokovic said of the final. “These are the occasions where he loves, where he thrives, in a big stage. So in a way it’s also not a surprise for me that he’s there. Honestly, as a tennis fan, I’m glad that he’s in the finals because he’s got so much talent.?/p>

Kyrgios finally fulfilling potential at Wimbledon

For his part, Kyrgios said he was disappointed not to get to play Nadal in the semifinal. Now, he says he’s “super proud?of himself, as he didn’t believe he would ever make a Grand Slam final based on his career trajectory.

“I had a shocking sleep last night,?Kyrgios said on Friday. “I was just restless. So many thoughts in my head about a Wimbledon final. That’s all I was thinking about…I feel like I’m just a reckless ball of energy right now.?/p>

Of course, no Kyrgios appearance comes without controversy. Not only is he facing domestic abuse allegations in Australia, he lashed out at fellow Australian tennis greats, who he says don’t generally support him, with the exception of Lleyton Hewitt.

“It’s pretty sad because I don’t get any support from any of the other Australian tennis players, the male side. Not the players, but like the past greats,?Kyrgios said. “It’s weird they just have like a sick obsession with tearing me down for some reason. I just don’t know whether they don’t like me or they’re afraid…but it sucks.?/p>

Neither Ons Jabeur nor Elena Rybakina had ever advanced past the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament before entering Wimbledon. Now, one will walk away with their first major title when they meet up in the final at the All England Club on Saturday.

Wimbledon odds Jabeur Rybakina

DraftKings sees Jabeur as the slight -145 favorite over Rybakina (+115) in the Wimbledon women’s final.

Jabeur sets new mark for Arab, African women

Jabeur defeated Tatjana Maria 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 on Thursday to reach the Wimbledon final. She will be the first African woman and the first Arab woman to ever play in a Grand Slam final.

“I’m a proud Tunisian woman standing here today,?Jabeur said in her on-court interview after the semifinal. “I want to see more and more ?not just Tunisian ?Arab, African players on tour. I just love the game and I want to share this experience with them.?/p>

While Jabeur doesn’t own much Grand Slam success, she has gradually been improving in recent years on tour. She made her first Grand Slam quarterfinal at the 2020 Australian Open, then reached the same round at Wimbledon last year. She finished the 2021 season at No. 10 in the WTA’s year-end rankings, and currently ranks No. 2 in the world behind only Iga Swiatek.

“It’s a dream coming true from years and years of work and sacrifice,?Jabeur said. “I’m really happy it’s paying off.?/p>

Rybakina booked her spot in the final with a convincing 6-3, 6-3 victory over former Wimbledon champion Simona Halep. The 23-year-old Rybakina is a rising star on tour who made her only previous Grand Slam quarterfinal last year at the French Open.

Russia questions haunt Rybakina ahead of Wimbledon final

Rybakina told reporters that she’s looking forward to her first Grand Slam final.

“For sure it’s an honor and I’m going to be very excited for this moment no matter if I win or lose,?Rybakina said of the trophy ceremony, where Kate Middleton will hand out the final awards. “I think it’s just something to remember, and it’s going to be amazing. Ons is a very good, tricky player and I think it’s going to be a great match.?/p>

However, Rybakina has had to answer a litany of questions about where she is from. While Rybakina has represented Kazakhstan since 2018, she was born and raised in Moscow, Russia. She changed her affiliation in order to improve her funding for her fledgling career.

With Wimbledon banning Russian and Belarusian players this year, Rybakina’s Russian background has become a major talking point heading into the final. Rybakina has tried to downplay this issue, dodging questions about whether she still lives primarily in Moscow.

“I’m playing already for Kazakhstan for a long time,?Rybakina told reporters. “They believed in me. There is no more question about how I feel. It’s just already a long time in my journey as a Kazak player. I played Olympics, Fed Cup.?/p>

Djokovic is now the -380 favorite to win Wimbledon at FanDuel Sportsbook. He opened the tournament as a -140 favorite at DraftKings Sportsbook, which had yet to post its championship odds following Nadal’s injury at the time of this writing.

Abdominal injury sidelines Nadal after tough quarterfinal

Nadal announced his decision on Thursday, citing a torn abdominal muscle for his withdrawal.

“Unfortunately, as you can imagine if I am here, I have to pull out from the tournament,?Nadal told reporters. “As everybody saw yesterday, I have been suffering with the pain in abdominal. I know something was not okay there, as I said yesterday.?/p>

Nadal struggled through an epic five-set match against American Taylor Fritz in his Wednesday semifinal, which he eventually won in a 10-point tiebreak. While Nadal practiced for less than an hour on Thursday, he was unable to hit serves at anywhere near his normal speed.

Nadal told reporters he decided to withdraw because he could no longer see himself winning Wimbledon with his injury.

“It’s very tough circumstances ?the injury will get worse and worse, I feel very sad to say that,?Nadal said. “I can’t win two matches under these circumstances.?/p>

The withdrawal sends Kyrgios through to his first Grand Slam final. FanDuel lists Kyrgios as a +300 pick to win Wimbledon.

While Kyrgios will likely face Djokovic in the final, that isn’t yet certain. Djokovic must first contend with No. 9 seed Cam Norrie in the other semifinal on Wednesday. Djokovic is a massive -2000 favorite over Norrie (+920) in that match. Norrie is a +2700 pick to win Wimbledon, even with just three players remaining in the field.

Nadal triumphed in a 10-point tiebreaker to finally put the match away by a 3-6, 7-5, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (10-4) score.

Nadal to face Kyrgios in Wimbledon semifinal

The victory moved Nadal into the Wimbledon semifinals for the eighth time in his career.

While Nadal gutted his way through the contest, he said afterward that there were times he felt he might not finish the match.

“I am a little bit tired to talk about my body,â€?Nadal said after the match. “But I am in the middle of the tournament and I have to keep going, no? All respect for the rest of the opponents. I am just trying my best every single day. For the moment I am healthy enough to keep going and fight for the things that I want.â€?/p>

Nadal will face the unseeded Nick Kyrgios in the next round. Kyrgios continued his deepest-ever run in a Grand Slam by reaching the Wimbledon semifinal with a 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) win over Cristian Garin.

Kyrgios has proven to be one of the most talented players on tour. However, his personality and antics on the court have kept him from reaching the elite level, and haven’t made him popular among fans. He also currently faces allegations that he assaulted an ex-girlfriend.

“I thought my ship had sailed,?Kyrgios said afterward. “Obviously, I didn’t go about things great early in my career and may have wasted that little window. But just really proud of the way I’ve just come back out here.?/p>

Halep continues delayed title defense

Kyrgios is 1-1 historically at Wimbledon against Nadal, and with the 22-time Grand Slam champion suffering at the moment, it could be anyone’s match on Friday. DraftKings Sportsbook lists Kyrgios as the -145 favorite over the ailing Nadal (+115).

“I hope to be ready to play,?Nadal said of the semifinal. “I need to be at 100% to keep having chances and that’s what I’m going to try to do.?/p>

In the women’s draw, 2019 Wimbledon champion Simona Halep advanced to the semifinal by beating Amanda Anisimova 6-2, 6-4 on Wednesday. Halep is playing in her first Wimbledon since winning the title, as she was injured in 2021 and organizers canceled the 2020 tournament due to COVID-19.

“I struggled a lot last year,?Halep said afterward. “I’m very emotional right now because it means a lot to be back in the semis.?/p>

Halep will now face No. 17 seed Elena Rybakina, who beat Ajla Tomljanovic 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 on Wednesday. This marks the first time Rybakina has reached a Grand Slam semifinal. She made it to the fourth round in her only other appearance in the Wimbledon main draw last year. Rybakina says she’s looking forward to playing Halep, who won their last two matchups in three sets each.

“In the end, I just know that I have to play until the end because she’s a great fighter,?Rybakina said. “No matter the score, just keep focusing on my game, on my plan. Just be more stable and also confident in some moments.?/p>

Halep is a -340 favorite over Rybakina (+265) in their semifinal. DraftKings lists Halep as the +110 favorite to win Wimbledon, with Ons Jabeur at +125.

Djokovic rallied to win 5-7, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 on Centre Court to win his 26th consecutive match at Wimbledon.

Djokovic feels momentum shift in third set

It was the seventh time in Djokovic’s career that he came back from a two-set deficit to win a match.

“I always believed that I could come back,?Djokovic said afterwards. “I know the experience I have could eventually prevail in these kind of situations. It was just a matter of momentum shift. I felt that the beginning of the third set is crucial to start well, try to break his serve early. That’s what happened.?/p>

Djokovic is now a -380 favorite to win the Wimbledon title at FanDuel Sportsbook. He’ll next face No. 9 seed Cam Norrie, who kept British hopes alive with a 3-6, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 epic win against David Goffin.

“All the sacrifices and everything hit me at once,?Norrie said as he struggled through the post-match interview. “The support here at Wimbledon, from my family and my friends, I didn’t know what to say. I got emotional there and it was just a crazy match to get through, especially after the way I started.?/p>

Norrie now faces a monumental task. FanDuel rates Norrie as a +920 underdog to Djokovic (-1800), who is looking to win his fourth straight Wimbledon title. By contrast, Norrie had never advanced past the third round of a Grand Slam before this tournament.

Jabeur, Tatjana reach first Wimbledon semifinals

In the women’s draw, No. 3 seed Ons Jabeur became the first Arab woman to reach the semifinals at a Grand Slam by beating Marie Bouzkova 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 on Tuesday. She’ll face 34-year-old German Tatjana Maria, who will play in her first major semifinal after beating Jule Niemeier 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.

The two players are friends on tour. Jabeur is the -900 favorite in their matchup.

“I’m really happy for her that she’s getting what she deserves,?Jabeur said on Tuesday. “It’s not easy coming back after having two babies. It’s going to be a great match between us, a lot of respect, for sure.?/p>

Wednesday’s matches will determine the remaining semifinalists at Wimbledon. On the men’s side, Nick Kyrgios (-450) will take on Cristian Garin (+350), with the talented Kyrgios looking to reach his first Grand Slam semifinal, while Garin takes part in his first major quarterfinal. Meanwhile, No. 2 seed Rafael Nadal (-280) takes on American Taylor Fritz (+220), who is making his deepest run ever in a Grand Slam.

In the remaining women’s quarterfinals, Ajla Tomljanovic (+158) takes on Elena Rybakina (-194), while 2019 champion Simona Halep (-210) battles Amanda Anisimova (+172).

Djokovic, who is now the -190 favorite to win Wimbledon at DraftKings Sportsbook, defeated Kobbinakis 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 in a day of easy work for the 20-time Grand Slam champion.

Djokovic steps up play in second-round rout

With world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev out of Wimbledon due to its ban on Russian players, and No. 2 Alexander Zverev nursing an injury, Djokovic is the clear favorite to lift the trophy in London. Rafael Nadal (+450) represents his toughest competition, with Stefanos Tsitsipas (+1400) and Carlos Alcaraz (+1200) the only other top-10 players remaining in the field.

“I think the quality of tennis was really high from my side,?Djokovic said after Wednesday’s match. “It was better than the first match performance, and I knew that I had to start off well today because I was facing a really tricky opponent, someone that serves well and has a big forehand, so I didn’t want to give him too much time.?/p>

While there were other top players in the men’s draw, they have been dropping like flies in the early going. On Wednesday, No. 3 seed Casper Ruud lost to France’s Ugo Humbert 3-6, 6-2, 7-5, 6-4. He joined sixth-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime and No. 7 seed Hubert Hurkacz as early exits, as they both lost in their first-round matches.

British fans also saw the end of the line for two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray, who lost his second-round matchup 6-4, 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (7-3), 6-4 to John Isner. Murray had never before lost to Isner, and this marks his earliest exit from Wimbledon.

“Look, it’s no secret that I am most definitely not a better tennis player than Andy Murray,?Isner said afterward. “I might have just been a little bit better than him today.?/p>

Raducanu out of Wimbledon in another early exit

In the women’s draw, US Open champion Emma Raducanu lost her second-round match to Caroline Garcia, dashing another British hope for a Wimbledon title. The 19-year-old Raducanu has lost in the second round of all three Grand Slam tournaments this year.

“There’s no pressure ?I’m still 19,?Raducanu told reporters. “I’m a Slam champion, so no one’s going to take that away from me. Yeah, if anything, the pressure is on those who haven’t done that.?/p>

Raducanu was one of three top-10 seeds on the women’s side to lose Wednesday at Wimbledon. No. 2 Anett Kontaveit saw her tournament come to an early end, losing 6-4, 6-0 to Germany’s Jule Niemeier. Meanwhile, 9th-seeded Garbine Muguruza, who won Wimbledon in 2017, fell by the same score to Greet Minnen in her delayed first-round match.

Those losses, combined with Serena Williams’ defeat on Tuesday, have further opened up the tournament draw for world No. 1 Iga Swiatek. The French Open champion is now the +140 favorite to win Wimbledon, with Ons Jabeur (+500) the only other player coming in at odds of tighter than +1200.

DraftKings Sportsbook previously listed Berrettini as the +550 second choice to win Wimbledon, behind only Novak Djokovic (-140).

Cilic, Berrettini both out with COVID

Berrettini, the No. 7 seed, joined No. 14 seed Marin Cilic, who also dropped out after a positive COVID-19 test. Cilic won the 2014 US Open and reached the final of Wimbledon in 2017, while Berrettini was the runner-up in last year’s Wimbledon.

“I am heartbroken to announce that I need to withdraw from Wimbledon due to a positive COVID-19 test result,?Berrettini wrote on Instagram. “I have had flu symptoms and been isolating the last few days. Despite symptoms not being severe, I decided it was important to take another test this morning to protect the health and safety of my fellow competitors and everyone else involved in the tournament. I have no words to describe the extreme disappointment I feel.?/p>

Following Berrettini’s withdrawal, the All England Club said it would review its current COVID-19 measures.

“As a major, even we have and continue to work in conjunction with the UK Public Health Security Agency and our local authority,?a spokesperson for the All England Club said. “We have maintained enhanced cleaning and hand sanitizing operations, and offer full medical support for anyone feeling unwell.?/p>

Cornet: Players stayed silent at French Open

The French Open concluded without any significant disruptions from COVID-19, though Barbora Krejcikova withdrew after a positive test. However, French player Alize Cornet said that players kept the spread of the coronavirus secret at Roland Garros.

“At Roland Garros there was an epidemic of COVID-19 and nobody talked about it,?Cornet told reporters on Tuesday. “In the locker room, everyone had it and we said nothing.?/p>

Berrettini’s withdrawal shortened the odds on the top two players remaining in the field. Djokovic saw his chances improve, with DraftKings now listing him as a -165 pick to win Wimbledon. Rafael Nadal’s odds shortened from +750 to +450.

Several other top-10 players are out of the men’s draw at Wimbledon for various reasons. World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev couldn’t play in London due to a ban on Russian players. World No. 2 Alexander Zverev is recovering from ankle surgery, while No. 10 Hubert Hurkacz lost his first-round match on Monday.

Novak Djokovic entered the 2022 Wimbledon tournament as an overwhelming favorite to win his 21st Grand Slam title and his seventh in the grass-court event, so it wasn’t news that he won his first-round match. The fact that he faced some real resistance, however, came as a surprise.

Djokovic dropped the second set, but recovered to beat South Korea’s Soonwoo Kwon 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Centre Court on Monday.

Kwon gives Djokovic trouble early

While Djokovic got the win, it was far from a vintage performance. Kwon broke early and took a 3-1 lead before Djokovic turned things around to take the first set. Kwon then won the second rather comfortably before Djokovic took control of the match.

“I did not start, or did not play, at my best,?Djokovic said after the match. “But I think when I needed to find the right shots, I did. I think [my] serve got me out of trouble in some decisive moments. I know I can do better.?/p>

No. 5 seed Carlos Alcaraz survived an even bigger stare. The young Spanish star twice trailed by a set before coming back to win 4-6, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 over Jan-Lennard Struff.

Wimbledon Odds – Men’s Winner (via DraftKings Sportsbook)
Novak Djokovic: -140 Matteo Berrettini: +550
Rafael Nadal: +750 Carlos Alcaraz: +1200
Felix Auger-Aliassime: +1700 Stefanos Tsitsipas: +2000
Nick Kyrgios: +2000 Andy Murray: +3500

In retrospect, perhaps Alcaraz expected a tough match. Struff won their only previous meeting at the 2021 French Open, and Struff previously ranked inside the top 30 before a foot injury kept him out of action for two months.

The top women who were in action at Wimbledon on Monday had an easier time of things. No. 2 seed Anett Kontaveit beat Bernarda Pera 7-5, 6-1, while No. 3 Ons Jabeur finished qualifier Mirjam Bjorklund 6-1, 6-3.

UK stars win openers at Wimbledon

British fans had the pleasure of watching two of the biggest stars in the UK win on Centre Court as well. No. 10 seed Emma Raducanu beat Alison Van Uytvanck 6-4, 6-4, after which, Andy Murray won his first-round match over James Duckworth 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.

“I did well to get through,?Murray said of his performance. “There is always nerves and pressure and butterflies and stress before the first round. It was great to get a win under my belt.?/p>

There were upsets at Wimbledon on Monday, as both No. 7 seeds suffered defeats. 2019 Wimbledon quarterfinalist Danielle Collins lost in three sets to Maria Bouzkova, while Alejandro Davidovich Fokina dropped men’s No. 7 seed Hubert Hurkacz 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, 5-7, 2-6, 7-6 (10-8).

Wimbledon Odds – Women’s Winner
Iga Swiatek: +150 Ons Jabeur: +600
Petra Kvitova: +1100 Cori Gauff: +1300
Simona Halep: +1500 Jelena Ostapenko: +1700
Serena Williams: +1800 Emma Raducanu: +1800
Bianca Andreescu: +2200 Belinda Bencic: +2200

Three of the biggest names in tennis will take Centre Court on Tuesday at Wimbledon. Women’s No. 1 seed Iga Swiatek will face off against Jana Fett (+1600), with Swiatek coming in as a -8000 favorite at DraftKings Sportsbook. Men’s No. 2 Rafael Nadal (-5000) will follow against Francisco Cerundolo (+1400), while Serena Williams (-320) will start her tournament against Harmony Tan (+250).
